In 2018, Nick and Millie Hennemann's family followed a call from God to become lay Catholic foreign missionaries. They lived and served in Costa Rica for almost two years and during that time studied Spanish in Guatemala. While in Guatemala, they developed lasting ties with a local missionary family, serving the poor together in the small town of San Jorge La Laguna.
During COVID, they saw a great need to help the poorest children in Guatemala receive an education. The child sponsorship program Gift of Hope formed out of that initiative and is serving 25 local families by meeting their children' basic needs, teaching catechism, and providing an after school program while assisting in furthering their education.
In 2023, Gift of Hope became a non-profit organization which continues to support children and their families in Guatemala and Nepal. The programs started in Costa Rica continue to benefit those communities.
The Hennemanns are based in Oregon and travel frequently to visit the mission projects.
